Heatwave alert: 54 deaths in Uttar Pradesh not due to sweltering heat? Authorities reveal real cause

As the sweltering heat is beating down on the northern states of the country, one of the worst hit states in India by the heatwave seems to be Uttar Pradesh. Multiple media reports showed that as many as 54 people in UP have died in the last few days due to the heatwave.

Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia district seems to be the worst hit by the heatwave, as 54 people have died and over 400 have been hospitalized in the midst of extremely high temperatures in the area, while the officials in the district are not making different claims regarding the deaths.

23 people died on June 15 alone, while the total number of deaths due to heatwave reached 54. However, the authorities are claiming that the deaths in Ballia are happening because of chest pains, and not the extreme heat as it was reported before.

While many doctors posted in government hospitals across Uttar Pradesh said that the deaths in Ballia are linked to the extreme heat in the state, one doctor from Lucknow pointed towards a different cause of death for most of the people.

As quoted by NDTV, a senior doctor named AK Singh said that prima facia, the deaths don’t seem linked to the heatwave conditions, as nearby districts with similar temperatures are not showing similar death figures.

The doctor further said that these deaths are not related to the current weather, but most of the people who died had initial symptoms of chest pain, which is not the first symptom in a person afflicted with heatstroke. He also said that the deaths could be linked to ingesting contaminated water.

As the hospital staff remains on alert, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has once again issued a heatwave warning for Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and other northern districts as well as Delhi NCR cities such as Noida, Gurugram, and others.

UP heatwave fatalities: 'Cause of death to be confirmed after...', says probe team | Mint

In Uttar Pradesh, severe heat conditions have killed over 50 people, and over 400 are still hospitalized in the Ballia district. The health director from Lucknow, who is investigating the cause of deaths and illness, revealed that most of the patients coming for the treatment complained of chest pain, difficulty in breathing, and then fever.

Dr AK Singh, Health Director Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh stated that the health officials are getting urine tests, blood tests, and other tests done so that the cause of the death can be confirmed.

“Most of the patients who are coming for treatment complain that they first had chest pain, difficulty in breathing, and then fever. We are getting urine tests, blood tests, and other tests done. The rest of the patients came to the hospital out of fear and panic," Dr. Singh told ANI.

He added, “The other patients admitted include those who already had some prior illness. We are taking samples, and then only we can confirm the cause of death."

A total of 54 people died and around 400 persons were hospitalized in the Ballia District Hospital of Uttar Pradesh in the last three days amid soaring temperatures.

There are different reasons for the deaths, of which, severe heat could be one factor, said doctors, adding that hospitalizations are rising due to severe heat conditions in the district.

A severe heatwave has swept Uttar Pradesh as most places are witnessing temperatures around 40 degrees.

SK Yadav, in-charge Medical Superintendent, District Hospital Ballia informed that 23 people died on June 15, while 20 on June 16 and 11 on Saturday.

Dr. BP Tiwari, Additional Health Director, Azamgarh Circle stated that a team from Lucknow will investigate the deaths if there is some other disease behind the deaths which is not being detected.

Apart from Uttar Pradesh, as many as 44 people have also lost their lives due to extremely hot weather in Bihar in the past 24 hours.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted severe to very severe heatwave conditions in Odisha, Vidarbha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, etc.

PM invokes Emergency on 'Mann ki Baat', calls it darkest period

Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed the Emergency the darkest period in the history of India and said the supporters of democracy then were tortured so much that it made the mind quiver even today.

In his monthly radio programme “Mann ki Baat”, PM Modi said, “I wish that today, when we are celebrating the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’, we must also take a glance through such crimes which endanger the freedom of the country. This will (in turn) make it easier for the today’s young generation to fathom the meaning and importance of democracy.”

“We consider the Constitution supreme. Therefore, we can never forget June 25, when the Emergency was imposed on our country. Lakhs of the people opposed the Emergency with full might,” Modi said in his programme scheduled earlier, given his upcoming visit to the US.

“Many books have been written on the atrocities, the punishment meted out by the police and the administration (during the Emergency). I also had the opportunity to write a book titled ‘Sangharsh Mein Gujarat’ at that time,” he noted.

Modi also said India had set an example in disaster management, invoking the successful management of cyclone Biparjoy, which made landfall near Kutch.

“It was said that Kutch would never be able to recover from the devastating earthquake two decades ago. Today, the same district is one of the fastest-growing districts of the country. I am sure the people of Kutch will emerge stronger from the devastation caused by cyclone Biparjoy,” said PM Modi.

Opposition leaders, meanwhile, targeted PM Modi for not speaking on the ongoing violence in Manipur in his “Mann ki Baat” programme.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said the PM patted his back for India’s “great capabilities in disaster management”, but remained silent on “entirely man-made” humanitarian disaster confronting Manipur.

“So one more ‘Mann ki Baat’, but ‘maun’ (silence) on Manipur. The PM patted himself on the back for India’s great capabilities in disaster management. What about the entirely man-made (actually self-inflicted) humanitarian disaster that is confronting Manipur? Still no appeal for peace from him,” Ramesh said in a tweet.

Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra tweeted, “Enough Mann Ki Baat! Now, it is time for some ‘Manipur ki Baat’.”
